 Burstall Pass Hike (Sept 16)

A group of 9 SVC members met at Shouldice park for a car-pooled trek into the depths of K country for another brilliant hike. There were many other groups on the trail and some of our group even ran into other friends. Once we arrived at the pass, we lunched there and discussed which direction to take from there. Our hikers are getting very creative with their lunch preparations.
After lunch we first trekked up a side hill (to see what was on the other side) and discovered a cairn with rocks secured by concrete, that was actually a memorial with a plaque. The view at the cairn was spectacular, and the quote on the plaque was, "Home at last." Cairns are commonly seen hiker made piles of rocks and the tradition is for hikers who pass to place another rock on the pile. Occasionally on summits, you will find capsules inside the cairns containing log books and pencils for hikers to sign and write their comments.
From there we headed off in another direction to a ridgeline that we wanted to see what was beyond. Some went all the way to the top and some waited behind and soaked up the sun. Once again we had a beautiful hike, and as ever, there were beautiful views to enjoy. In all we put about 22 kilometers on our boots, and gained about 472 m.
Normally we would have headed to Canmore or Calgary for dinner together, but people wanted to head in different directions, so the group split up.
